I have seen the rusted orange of the Namib sand sea. Sat under the sapphire ski and traced the crocked lines of the trees in Dead Vlei. So when I heard about the #Binti series I was excited to read a sci-fi story set against the rich tapestry of Namibia These novellas pack a lot into a small space and throw the reader right in to a world already diversely populated. That’s what I loved about it the most; the setting. But the short format does have its drawbacks. There were cop-outs, and some really short handed logic that I wished were teased out. ? B O O K R E V I E W ✨ And my post for today’s #onceyougoblackout challenge: fantasy/futurism ✊? Many thanks to the hosts of this challenge @reggiereads @thestackspod @lowelowexxoo @book_girl_magic @absorbedinpages @exlibrislls @never_withouta_book ? . . . ? This is a quick and fascinating read that packs in a surprising amount of depth and complex world-building. (Google for full summary; spoilers ahead!) I love that the main character, Binti, is a young woman who is brilliant at math and other skills, and uses her abilities to survive and resolve complex problems. She’s also fiercely committed to her culture, her native land, and her family. Nnedi Okorafor beautifully incorporates her Nigerian heritage into the work she creates, which sets this series apart from other sci-fi I’ve read. One part of the plot is the Meduse, a jelly-fish-esque alien race, are furious that Oomza Uni took their chief’s stinger for research and now have it on display in their museum. Binti is able to prevent a bloody conflict by telling some Oomza Uni professors that their actions were wrong and persuading them to return the stinger to its rightful owner, which they do, apologizing for harms causes. Similarly, the university where I go to school has over time stolen and held items from indigenous/native communities to study (not to mention that the school is built on stolen land). Though the university has a program where they are working to return items to their rightful owners, it’s imperfect and doesn’t fully amend for the wrongs that were done. This type of crime has been committed over and over again by colonialists against native folks and I’m glad that Okorafor highlighted a parallel narrative in her fiction.
