Documentarian Rachel Lears has spent her career uplifting the narratives of marginalized folks. Her latest film, "Knock Down the House," followed four female candidates who overcame huge obstacles to run against congressional incumbents (and one of those women just happens to be our friend @ocasio2018 ?). Congrats to Lears on her incredible film, which just won her a grant from the Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund. ?#FemaleFilmmakerFriday Photo: @jubileefilms . . . . #RachelLears #womenincongress #womeninfilm #womeninmedia #womeninart #femaleartists #womenartists #femalefilmmakers #strongwomen #feminism #womeninthearts #film #bwff

Alumnae News: The Sundance Film Festival @sundanceorg opens TODAY, and alumna Rachel Lears ’95 has a documentary in the competition. Below is an excerpt from her interview with Coordinator of Alumnae Relations Alicia Walker ’98 about her film #KnockDowntheHouse. Learn more about Rachel’s career, the film, and how she balanced this “labor of love” as a new mom in the story on our website. Visit our FB page for the link or find it under Alumnae. . . Looking for a story about people from different walks of life coming together in solidarity to create big change, Rachel became acquainted with two groups: Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats. Both of these groups were recruiting extraordinary, ordinary, working people, coming across social divides to create big change. As they brought candidates onto their slates, and as women running for congress became a big topic, Rachel focused her new film Knock Down the House on four women whose experiences inspired her and whose life-challenges were relatable. The unifying factor among the candidates was the refusal to take any corporate funding for their campaigns. They were entirely grassroots funded, and this was the first time this had happened on such a large scale across the country at the congressional level. . . As Rachel and her family (more on that to come) traveled around the country making this film, there were so many inspiring and memorable moments. One of the most incredible for Rachel, however, was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's victory night. While many believed it was a winnable race, you just never know in politics, and certainly no one expected the race to be called so early. Rachel was with Alexandria in the car traveling to the watch party after the polls had closed, and Alexandria had not been watching any of the coverage. Having a camera in the car with her and one waiting at the location, they were able to capture the incredible moment of Alexandria learning that she had won the election. #wearesacredheart
