Return of the historic posts! They may both be .45 ACP, but we're focusing on the Smith & Wesson M1917 Revolver! Not to be confused with me Enfield 1917, This nifty wheel gun was designed in 1917 and was in production until 1920, with roughly 300,000 total pieces made. Two companies, S&W and Colt, took a shot at making this pistol. First we will focus on Colt. Despite only being produced for 3 years, the M1917 remains in service (in some countries) today and has seen conflicts such as WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. In Vietnam, this pistol was used by the "tunnel rat" units, since it was great at very close range combat. It was never as popular as the M1911, but it was issued to secondary and non-combat troops. Based on the previous M1909 in .45 long colt that was used during the Philippine-American war, the M1917 used basically the same design with a modified cylinder meant to fire the .45 ACP. This was done by Colt via moon clips for the larger cylindered M1909, but that was unreliable as the rounds could slip forward. S&W made their M1917 by modifying the Second Model .44 Hand Ejector. They simply shortened the cylinder, allowing the .45 ACP to sit nicely inside. The S&W version was far more reliable. Though this Revolver, just like most others, was phased out by semi autos, the M1917 was used by roughly 40 countries, such as the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and almost any Asian/African nation you can think of. Overall, the main allure of this pistol is the fact that it's a .45 ACP Revolver! If that doesn't sound like an incredibly fun time at the range, you're just plain wrong. If you want to own one of the pistols, expect to pay $650-950, with some priced at $400 and some in the thousands. William Stewart Boyd traded his father’s old .38 caliber Smith & Wesson snub nose for less than $100 in a gun buy-back in 2004. It was supposed to be destroyed, but somehow the same handgun with serial number J515268 was found next to a dead body involved in a police shooting eight years later. Boyd, a judge in Cook County, had taken the handgun to a South Side church in Chicago, Illinois where he handed it over to a pair of plainclothes officers with badges on their belts. “I’m doing the right thing,” he said in an interview with Chicago’s Sun Times, “and, in the process, someone didn’t do what they were supposed to do. That calls into question the process. What’s happening after you turn these weapons in?” 22-year-old Cesar A. Munive, a gang member convicted of sexual abuse of a minor, unlawful use of a weapon, and battery, was shot and killed by Cicero Officer Donald Garrity in July of 2012. Boyd’s old revolver was found laying next to Munive’s body after the shooting. Now Boyd and others want to know how it got there. Officer Garrity is currently collecting a disability pension associated with PTSD and has a long history of disciplinary problems. Garrity has been under investigation for wielding a “high-powered rifle” during a traffic stop, threatening a fellow poilce officer, and was once pulled over for driving 90 mph in a 30 mph zone. He resigned from the Berwyn Police Department following multiple investigations and was hired by Cicero in 2012. Munive’s family has accused Garrity of planting the handgun at the scene of the crime to justify his use of force. The family attorney said there were “plenty of warnings readily available to any reasonable police department that it was not safe to put a gun in the hands of such an unstable individual.” The city of Cicero is ready to pay Munive’s family $3.5 million to settle a civil rights lawsuit out of court. “No one would hire him except Cicero,” the attorney wrote in a court document. Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi calls the revolver’s role in the shooting “extremely abnormal and troublesome.” In a formal statement to the press, Guglielmi said, “We are opening an internal affairs investigation".?

The name popped up last week when Boston Mayor Marty Walsh bowed to pressure from John Henry, owner of the Boston Red Sox and The Boston Globe, to officially rename Yawkey Way back to Jersey Street. Henry got the mayor to do his bidding because Henry said he was “haunted” by the alleged racist past of Tom Yawkey, the late owner of the Red Sox. When Henry asks, Walsh acts. So the mayor, following a vote of his Public Improvement Commission, quietly had the Yawkey Way street signs taken down at 5 a.m. Wednesday and replaced them with Jersey Street signs. The street, by Fenway Park, was named in honor of Tom Yawkey in 1977, a year after his death. It was done without any fanfare or objections. Prior to that it had been called Jersey Street. Yawkey owned the team from 1933 until his death in 1976. ⤵️

The Winchester 1873, a staple in any cowboy's collection. This iconic rifle was designed in, well, 1873, and was produced from then until 1923 (though it is being produced again!). Originally, the "Gun that Won the West" came chambered in .44-40, which is the first centerfire round to become popular, but the gun was also offered in .38-40 and .32-20. All three of these loads became popular pistol calibers, which meant one could carry a single type of ammo for both of their guns. While the standard rifle came with a 24 inch barrel, a 20 inch barrel was also available. Winchester would make any request asked for, which included 12 inch barrels, a "musket" version, engravings, and so on. Interestingly, the original rifle was never offered in .45 Colt, as Colt owned the rights to use that round at the time. To celebrate the success of the rifle, Winchester produced the "One Of One Thousand" variant, which was a title stamped on rifles that offered particularly tight groups and generally sound attributes during testing. These versions sold for $100 back in 1875, which is roughly $2,200 today. Only 136 of these guns were made. As for the standard 1873's, roughly 720k were produced by 1923. If you'd like to own one of these iconic rifles, you can buy a newly made one from Winchester for around $1k, but an original will cost you anywhere from $4-15k!
