The average person takes around 23,040 breaths a day. Each lung contains 300 million alveoli (air sacs), when spread out would cover an entire football field or 57,600 square feet. How many breaths are you conscious of during your waking hours? Particular breath practices (pranayama) can reduce anxiety, create more awareness, balance the right and left sides of the brain and yin/yang aspects of the body, move prana through the body to stimulate healing, release tension, bring you back into the parasympathetic nervous system, and help repair and build the immune system. When we're not aware of the breath, we reside in the upper part of the lungs. When we don't breathe deeply we do not exhale deep stagnant air and toxins at the bottom of the lungs. ✨a simple yet effective breath practice to try: start by taking a few deep inhales in the nose and out the mouth. Then inhale through the nose for 4 counts and exhale through the nose for 4 counts for several rounds. You might start to add a pause at the top of the inhale and bottom of the exhale for 4 counts.
