It is always a thrill to see the excitement of a writer at the launch of their first published book. Last night at Third Place Books was no exception. An overflow crowd was there to cheer for Kelli Estes on the publication of her THE GIRL WHO WROTE IN SILK. Kelli and I are next to a beautifully embroidered Chinese sleeve from the 1800s. Such a sleeve plays a major role in the book. (The book also details many of the horrors endured by Chinese people due to The Chinese Exclusion Act, which was enacted in 1883 and wasn't repealed until 1943.) The audience not only got to share the joy of Kelli but was treated to a bounty of delicious treats. The book, which is lovely, is an Indie Next pick for July. What a great title and beautiful cover! #kelliestes #thegirlwhowroteinsilk #sourcebooks #sourcebookslandmark #indienext #indienextlist #indiesfirst #independentbookstores #independentbooksellers #thirdplacebooks @thirdplacebooks #embroidery #chinesesleeve #booklaunch #booklaunchparty #orcasisland #seattle #caroles2015authorevents
Visited the beautiful @rhodescollege yesterday with the family to watch a documentary about #TheChineseExclusionAct that will be featured on @pbs later this year.. it was truly eye opening to witness the amount of blatant racism that existed in this country for over 60 years (the length of this despicable law), and the impact on this country's history that the Chinese/Chinese-Americans have made.. it made me truly proud to see how the Chinese overcame such hardships and came out stronger and better.. I'm so grateful K paid attention during the entirety of the 2.5 hour film, and took great interest in its content.. if you ever have time.. please take a few minutes to just watch the trailer of the film, or educate yourself on the extent of the Chinese Exclusion Act/Geary Act.. it's shocking that there is such little mention of this type of atrocity in our history books.. growing up, I recall the Chinese Exclusion Act only being a mere vocabulary term on our quizzes.. It didn't even deserve an entire chapter in our textbook.. yet it is the ONLY federal legislation in United States history to ever single out and name a specific race and nationality for exclusion from immigration and citizenship... #chineseamerican #chinesepride #chineseheritage #eraseracism #chinese #immigrants #rhodescollege #culturalstudies #culture #history #memphis #901 See trailer: https://youtu.be/d3YwtmZwpIY
