Holocaust survivor Sonia Warshawski, 91, has been telling her story of survival to Kansas prison inmates for the past two years. “It gives them a different perspective of being in prison in America and being in prison in a German concentration camp,” said SuEllen Fried, a mental health activist from Prairie Village. Fried co-founded the nonprofit Reaching Out From Within in 1982 with Greg Musselman, an inmate serving a life sentence. “This tiny, little woman,” Fried said. “She survived because of her wits and her determination. She brings hope. She says to them, ‘If I can get out of prison and I can survive, imagine how you can survive. Imagine what you can do with your lives.’” Warshawski is also the subject of her granddaughter's movie, "Big Sonia," due out in November. ? by Keith Myers; story by Eric Adler. #holocaust #holocaustsurvivor #kansascity #kc
When I met Sonia Warshawski on the day this photo was taken at her tailor shop in Kansas City, she was pulling weeds from the ground in front of the store. It's not every day you meet a 90 year old (now 91) who moves with such agility and determination, but Sonia is not your average nonagenarian. As I crouched down to help her, I asked why she didn't just let the landscaper handle it and she replied, 'I learned a long time ago not to wait for anyone to do something you can do yourself.' Today was International Holocaust Remembrance Day and Sonia is one of the oldest living survivors of the Holocaust that brutally claimed the lives of more than 6 million innocent men, women, and children including most of Sonia's own immediate and extended family. Her life story is nothing short of remarkable, but I won't spoil it for you. Instead, I invite you to go to BigSonia.com and learn about "Big Sonia," a documentary film by Sonia's granddaughter, Leah Warshawski and her husband, Todd Soliday. Then, if you are able, please make a contribution on that page to help ensure "Big Sonia" makes it to as many theaters as possible. Sonia's story is one we ALL need to witness. #peoplewhoinspiremein2017 #BigSonia #internationalholocaustremembranceday
Wearing my hat from the film in theaters across the nation later this Fall. Sonia is a 91 year-old Holocaust survivor who works with people all over the world. In the last store in a defunct shopping mall, 91-year-old Sonia Warshawski – great-grandmother, businesswoman, and Holocaust survivor – runs the tailor shop she’s owned for more than 30 years. But when she’s served an eviction notice, the specter of retirement prompts Sonia to resist her harrowing past as a refugee and witness to genocide. A poignant story of generational trauma and healing, BIG SONIA also offers a laugh-out-loud-funny portrait of the power of love to triumph over bigotry, and the power of truth-telling to heal us all.
