This film is something that every artist should watch. Cyril Montana is a writer who grew up in the small French village where I live. Today he is our hero. For although we all wring our hands and cry over what’s happening to this community we love, Cyril had the courage to do something about it. He took a stand and made art about it. This documentary shows how Cyril attempted to save our village from being destroyed by fashion designer Pierre Cardin. You’re probably asking yourself, “Really? Pierre Cardin is destroying a French village?” Yes. Cardin is a very rich man who likes to buy houses. He’s bought nearly half the houses, and all of the businesses, in this village. Many of the farms too.He doesn’t want to live in them nor cultivate them. He doesn’t want to bring in new commerce. He simply likes to buy them, gut them, and leave them abandoned. Some of these houses have been in the same family for generations. Now those families are scattered to the wind and the once-proud buildings sit vacant. The town itself is torn into factions between those who value his money and those who value what was lost. Our beloved village has been forever altered by a rich man’s fancy. The streets are quiet. Where once there were shops and cafés, now there is silent emptiness. I remember the echoes of children’s laughter in the cobbled streets before Cardin arrived. And the haunting silence now pains me. What’s happened to our village is just a tiny representation to what’s happening to our world.
