Tom lived, physically unharmed. 20 years later with his life out of kilter he has returned to the remote Scottish island where the tragedy took place. Thus begins the fabulous Our Fathers. When Tom returns he asks his uncle, his fathers brother, if he might stay with him. Both men are taciturn not revealing themselves to the other, his uncle while willing, is unsure how to help his nephew with the suppressed guilt at surviving those terrible events. Over long walks across the Hebridean landscape they finally start to communicate. Some of the islanders too are less than happy to see Tom back, as they too are reminded of those terrible events and they role they too played in them. Had they missed the signs of abuse, the father had seemed such a nice man? Whose fault was it? This book is a riveting account of a community finally coming to terms, after many years, with an event that rocked their community and finally facing up to the true. January wrap up. . I had a great reading month; a lot of 5⭐️ reads, and many that really affected me and will stay with me. . Not included in this pile is the wonderful The Cut Out Girl by Bart Van Es because a friend has borrowed it. My Dark Vanessa is in the post on its way to @booksinscotland (and now another friend has borrowed The Choke!). . I’ve reviewed all of these except two: The Patron Saint of Lost Souls which I won in a giveaway from the lovely @menna.vanpraag and read whilst hosting parties between Christmas and Hogmanay. It’s set in Cambridge (my beautiful home town 💕) so I was in my element and really enjoyed an uplifting story amidst my darker reads. . The Language Of Birds is the other one I haven’t reviewed. It’s about the Lord Lucan affair, told from the POV of the nanny (who was murdered in a probable case of mistaken identity; his wife being the likely target) and her best friend. I enjoyed reading more about the case as I remember my parents discussing it as Lord Lucan would allegedly be spotted at various places in the 1980’s. But it wasn’t a stand out book for me. . I reckon I had an amazing start to the year. Here’s hoping February gives me so many outstanding reads. It's a happy publication day mini review, today's being that of Rebecca Wait'"s extraordinary novel 'Our Fathers' published in hardback by @riverrun_books who very kindly provided me with a copy. - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Through the altering narrations found throughout the novel, you can begin to piece together what contributed and ultimately lead a man to killing his family. The reader is spiralled down a rabbit hole of events from both Tom and Malcolm's points of view. Different stories that share similar sadness. Rebecca has used many aspects of real life to create a movingly poignant novel that is filled with tenderness and compassion, with heartbreak speckled throughout. Our Fathers revolves around family violence that show how it affects the survivors, and especially Tom is trying to avoid becoming that monster he fears. I immediately became intoxicated by the writing, captivated by the characterisation and plotline, I never wanted to surface from the waves of Tom's sadly chaotic life. Our Fathers by Rebecca Wait has just been published by @riverrun_books. It’s fantastically well written and feels important. I finished this book weeping. Lucid and terrible, this beautifully written novel examines not the story of a murderer’s act, but the story of all his victims. The pernicious myth of the ‘good man who snapped’ needs burying forever. Good men do not control or hurt their families. I was utterly absorbed by Tommy and Malcolm, attempting over umpteen cups of tea to help each other, speaking haltingly in an unfamiliar language of guilt, fear, grief and love. The landscape of the Hebridean island of Litta - weather-buffeted, hostile, remote yet claustrophobic - is brilliantly evoked. This is a book that will stay with me.
