The Foundation Pit by Andrei Platonov, a book I've looked forward to reading for a long time, but I must admit it was less compelling than expected. The central metaphors - the never finished pit itself and the aggressively ideological but frail girl Nastya as reflections of the early Soviet state - work reasonably well, but can be at times blunt and overbearing. The best sections detail the rural collectivization drive and show Platonov's obvious distaste for the dehumanization of the better off peasantry, the driver of the book's ban during his lifetime. The writing is sometimes characteristic of Platonov's other works (Happy Moscow being my favorite) but the FP reads unevenly, almost as though it isn't quite the finished product. I wonder if this may be a translation issue and will compare the #nyrbooks translation by Robert Chandler (who did the excellent Vasily Grossman editions for NYRB). On the whole worth a read, but keep the expectations in check. #andreiplatonov #sovietliterature #instabookreview
I found a screaming deal on this Harvill Press hardcover edition of Andrei Platonov's the Foundation Pit. This is one of the big post-revolution Russian works I have not had the pleasure of reading yet, but I am very excited to do so! Russian lit is almost always the best lit! #andreyplatonov #russianliterature #sovietliterature #literature #books #russian
#tbrthursday: Three titles I bought from the Vintage Futures series... I am not much one to go for artsy cover editions but these actually come with a lenticular plate that when you use with the cover becomes psychedelically "animated" - made me nostalgic because I really digged the lenticular stuff growing up. It is in the same vein as kaleidoscopes and those stereoscopic view master toys for me. Haha. ? . . . I am actually #currentlyreading reading Vermillion Sands. Very nice - I have one other J. G. Ballard book my TBR (High Rise). Am actually trying to read more J. G. Ballard. Too many books. Foundation Pit and Aerodrome I selected based on the blurbs. They won out over the Phillip Roth, Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Kurt Vonnegut titles in the series (there are actually 9 titles in the Vintage Futures series, the remaining 3 I have either read or have copies of). ? . . . #? #? #bibliophile #bookstagram #instabooks #booknerd #bookgeek #bookworm #books #readreadread #sff #scific #speculativefiction #vintage #vintageimprint #jgballard #andreyplatonov #rexwarner #vermillionsands #theaerodrome #vintagefutures #psychedelicart #bookenthusiast #tbrthursdaykefuwa
I tried making a book spiral and failed miserably. I think I like clean lines better. ? I love how the color pops out on this otherwise simple and ordinary editions. A little bit too small to hold, but who cares once you start reading ? #vintagefuture #thehandmaidstale #herland #vermillionsands #theaerodome #reader #bookworm #bookhaul #kurtvonnegut #read #bookpic #bookphotography #bookpost #booksofinstagram#reader #bookworm #bookstagram #bibiliophile #obsessivebookbuyer #fiction #booknerd #bookreview #instabook #booklover #booklove #followforfollow #read #bookpic #bookphotography #bookpost #booksofinstagram #bookgeek #bookdragon #bookaddict #bookgeek #followforfollowbookstagram #igbooks
Happy birthday to Andrei Platonov! The Soviet Russian writer was born #otd in 1899. He was a communist, but his work was banned in Russia for many years because of his objections to totalitarianism, collectivism, and other Stalinist policies. His was an original avant-garde voice and in the years since his death has become one of the most influential writers in Russia. #andreiplatonov #thefierceandbeautifulworld #bornonthisday #authorbirthday #literarybirthday #literature #russianliterature #sovietliterature #books #bookstagram #libraryreads

| Morning long weekend. ❤️
I’m thinking about changing the structure of my account a little as I generally feel it’s lacking direction and I’m uninspired ??♀️. Before I couldn’t keep up but I think now I might start posting mini reviews etc but only for physical books because my kindle is hard to photograph. . Also wondering what you all think of captions? I use this as a sort of diary and it really helps me to write stuff out but do you prefer happy captions?? Largely I don’t feel the need to share happy things as I am a pessimist and half like to think about miserable things as I think they’re more interesting ?. Perhaps why I love Russian lit? . Also I have read nearly 80 books this year so I’m so far ahead in my goodreads challenge I think once I get Dune etc out the way I may try and focus on bigger books for the rest of the year, trying to put less pressure on myself. I say this EVERY year but next year I swear no reading challenge for me ??♀️ . . . . #vintageclassics #thewomaninwhite #wilkiecollins #thegulagarchipelago #aleksandersolzhenitsyn #thenameoftherose #umbertoeco #theunicorn #irismurdoch #thecollector #johnfowles #andreyplatonov #thefoundationpit
Reading The Foundation Pit by Andrey Platanov. Russian fiction kicks ass so I have high hopes for this. Shoutout to my mum for pouring my Turkish coffee. • Finished: In the Driver's Seat (or Constitutional, as published in the U.K.) by Helen Simpson. Rating: 4.5/5. Domestic fiction (unremarkable scenes of everyday life bubbling with existential crises) at its artful best - it's my very favourite kind of fiction to read. Dazzling, bright, sharp, fizzy prose. The writing is so good, the stories so diamond sharp and compressed that I was humbled and in ecstasy reading them. They were like flashes of illumination of what makes a life, what we face and feel in this modern world surrounded by chaos, and how we deal with it. Akin to the kind of pure bliss the stories of Lorrie Moore give me.
Give me another two years and I’ll also have the rocking chair and the pipe! ?◾️? You know what's really weird? Reading something written in your native language in translation, especially if you haven't read it in the original before. #platonov #books
I finished The Sirens of Titan; my review will be on Goodreads soon. I am no fan of science fiction. In fact, I always say that Vonnegut (and Bradbury, to be fair) constitutes my literary sci-fi limit – The Sirens slightly tested this limit, being the most science fictiony of the Vonneguts I have thus far read. Yet in the end, that did not detract from my enjoyment of the novel. Now I'll read something that has been eyeing me from my shelf for a long time. Andrei Platonov, pen name of Andrei Platonovich Klimentov (1899-1951), was a Soviet Russian writer and poet. He was one of the first Russian thinkers to criticize as inhumane Stalin's plans for collectivization. His allegorical novel The Foundation Pit was finished in 1930, but due to censorship it wasn't published in the Soviet Union until 1987. If you appreciate writers like Solzhenitsyn, Shalamov, Grossman, Zamyatin, Bulgakov, Orwell, et cetera, you might want to check out Platonov (if you haven't already).
