18 June 1997- Return of the Jedi Pioneer special effects make-up artist and Star Wars legend Stuart Freeborn visits the Episode 1 set in June 1997. Freeborn was famous for his work on developing original trilogy iconic characters such as Chewbacca, Jabba the Hutt and Yoda, the latter striking an uncanny if purposeful likeness to the artist. As documented in the 1998 webisode on the official website, Freeborn is seen being given a VIP tour of the creature department by live action creature effects supervisor Nick Dudman. The webisode is a fantastic behind the scenes insight into what was to come. Freeborn, completely in his element recalls the processes of constructing the iconic sculptures as he is reunited with his original Chewbacca and Yoda masks. Dudman informs Freeborn that a process change for Episode 1 is that the creatures would be made from silicon rubber instead of foam latex as it can be made translucent and made soft. In the creature shop many designs of creatures new and old can be seen and various stages of development. From reference photographs to silicon heads and torsos to fully realised background and foreground character models, the wealth of creativity is a fantastic demonstration of the work that was going in to develop the film. Freeborn himself is visibly enthralled by the complex animatronics demonstrated to him by the returning Ree-Yees design. With three eyes moving and blinking freely without any restraint to a chorus of servos from a radio control console, it is quite clearly that technology has advanced considerably since the last Star Wars film. Freeborn remarks “This is a creature film”. A beautiful moment marks the end of the tour and Freeborns visit as Dudman, on behalf of the creature workshop crew present Freeborn with a bronze bust of Yoda.
