Cedric Morris ‘Easter Bouquet’ (detail) #easter Even though Cedric Morris (1889-1982) was an immensely prolific painter of portraits, travel works and still lives, it is perhaps his flower paintings for which he is best known. Morris consistently worked from species of plants and flowers that he greatly admired and in almost all instances those which he propagated himself at the Pound and later Benton End. His keen and scientific understanding of plants and flowers informed his approach when he came to paint them. This imbues his painting with a sense of heightened character and individuality particularly when discerning the formal and tonal differences between flowers. #easter #easterbouquet #happyeaster #cedricmorris #daffodils #spring #april #painting #flowers #floraldisplay #floral #flora #colour @gardenmuseum #artistplantsman #beyondthegardenwall

ONE WEEK TO GO... Discovering Cedric Morris Part 8: A View from Home In 1929, Cedric and Lett-Haines took out the lease on Pound Farm, in Higham, near the River Stour in Suffolk. 'The Pound', as it was known, was the first established base for the pair away from London and, before that, Paris. Here Morris transformed the gardens and filled them with exotic breeds of flowers and plants gathered while on his travels abroad. Add to this a menagerie of birds (including a macaw named Rubio) horses in the neighbouring fields and numerous cats and dogs, the Pound must have been a truly spectacular escape from the demands and pressures of the increasingly volatile, urban-centric art world. It was a haven and one that welcomed a steady flow of visitors throughout the 1930s for legendary bohemian parties and wild creative exchanges. Watch Philip discuss Morris's work 'Pin Mill and Black Headed Gulls' painted the year in which Morris and Lett made the permanent move to Suffolk and one of our highlights from 'Cedric Morris: Beyond the Garden Wall' #cedricmorris #pinmill #suffolk #england #dog #whippet #philipmould #exhibition #oneweek #show #film #pound #bentonend #stour #cedric #watch #excited #notlongnow #legendary #party #bohemian #seagull #river #stour #naturalworld #birds #painted #nature #britishart

The present detail is noticeably post-impressionist in tone, harking back to the paintings of Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) completed in Tahiti during the late-19th century. The expressionistic segmentation of colour is a compositional approach that Morris often employed and it is particularly prominent here. Contrasted with this is the quickly executed brushwork in the foreground that provides a playful balance to an otherwise static view. #1950 #postimpressionist #cedricmorris #atlasmountains #morocco #irises #travel #paulgauguin #colour #beauty #landscape
At the age of 19, Cedric Morris was perhaps already assimilating the post-impressionistic, pointillist tendencies of artists such as Georges Seurat (1859–1891) and it is therefore plausible that an artist of such an age was able to adapt to the techniques of continental European artists. It is clear from this detail from the earliest work in our exhibition ‘Landscape with Mountains Beyond’ (c. 1908) that Morris was indeed experimenting with colour, applied through the medium of watercolour in layers upon layers of small, delicate daubs, much like Seurat. Morris was to head to Paris in 1914 to study art prior to returning back to England at the outbreak of the war. It is certainly possible that he was already aware of the developments in art on the continent in 1908 and that this work is an early experiment in such a style, executed long before his trip to France. #cedricmorris #landscape #mountains #watercolour #earlywork #pink #blue #postimpressionism #seurat #detail #beyondthegardenwall

Cedric Morris (1889-1982) frequently returned to North Africa during the 1950s. Having spent a considerable amount of time there a few decades earlier, he was all too familiar with this part of the continent. In 1952, Morris travelled to the small town of Talmest in the Essaouira Province, Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz, Morocco. The precise purpose of his journey is currently unknown; however, it is likely he was in search of rare and exotic plants from which his own specimens could be propagated. #cedricmorris #morocco #talmest #atlasmountains #irises #datetrees #mountains #landscape #enpleinair #painting #postimpressionism #modernbritish #gauguin
