Posted @withrepost • @nancytoomeyfineart Brian Dettmer, "New Wonderland," 2019, Hardcover Books, Acrylic Varnish, Pedestal, 61 x 9 x 9 Inches. “New Wonderland" is a vertical tower composed of a twelve-book set of "The Wonderland of Knowledge," a mid-century children’s encyclopedia published in 1947 intended to captivate and educate the youth of that era. A matrix of saturated, pastel images, and text grows upward from the base, offering a rich surface of fragmented clusters and concepts of the past century. Text becomes poetry and even political commentary as isolated words and phrases take on new meaning, particularly in our contemporary political landscape. The work resembles a totem pole, offering a structure for the stories and history of our past, while framing the object of the book as a cultural artifact from another culture or time. Windows and gaps through the sculpture’s surface reflect the forgotten memories of our own cultural past, allowing us to see air and light through the dense records of history. @briandettmerstudio @nancytoomeyfineart @minnesotastreetproject #briandettmer #elegies #intricatelysculpted #printedmatter #relatedtoliterature #foundobjects #contemporaryDIY #appropriation #science #assemblage #maps #networks #biomorphic #sculpture #openform #unitedstates #text #cityscapes #flora #cityscapesandcityscenes #soloshow #exhibition #nancytoomeyfineart #minnesotastreetproject #sanfrancisco #fineart #dogpatch
Posted @withrepost • @nancytoomeyfineart Brian Dettmer, “Opposing Colors,” “Bubblescape,” and “Post Landscape,” 2017, Hardcover Books, Acrylic Varnish, 16 x 17.25 x 6 Inches Each In the "Comic Heroes," series the formulaic trappings of superheroes and the mythmaking they embody are questioned through a sculptural form of data mining. In each work, two large tomes from the comic book world's biggest publishers merge to create a single scene. Each sculpture uses a set of categorical guidelines to guide the carving and excavation of imagery; the result reveals the hidden structures and assumptions of these fantastic worlds. Comic book heroes offer supernatural solutions to real world problems, but the decisions they make and the examples they portray are often more damaging than the issues they set out to save. This series breaks down these symbols and narratives to examine problematic aspects of the material while exposing parallels between fantasy worlds and our own reality. @briandettmerstudio @nancytoomeyfineart @minnesotastreetproject #briandettmer #elegies #intricatelysculpted #printedmatter #relatedtoliterature #foundobjects #contemporaryDIY #appropriation #science #assemblage #maps #networks #biomorphic #sculpture #openform #unitedstates #text #cityscapes #flora #cityscapesandcityscenes #soloshow #exhibition #nancytoomeyfineart #minnesotastreetproject #sanfrancisco #fineart #dogpatch

They both got to pick out their own jack-o'-lantern design and even helped a little bit and then left the mess for us to clean up which was nice. They'll pay for it in every single Milky Way Midnight they get. #thehuman #thefantastic

Paa Joe [@paajoecoffins] is a Ghanaian artist who specializes in fantasy coffins. Now in his 70s, he is considered to be one of the most important coffin artists of his generation. Over the past 40 years he has created custom coffins in varied shapes from coca-cola bottles to chameleons and sneakers to carry people into the afterlife. His work continues the 1950s Ghanaian tradition of the Ga people of using ornate coffin designs to celebrate the lives of chiefs and priests. The works are typically based on the lives and interests of those being buried in them. His bizarre sculptures have garnered a Western audience leading to his work being presented at the Brooklyn Museum, the British Museum, Centre Pompidou and others. He has also had solo and group shows in New York, Accra, Berlin, Cologne, LA and San Francisco. He has also been featured in articles for ArtDaily, BBC News, The New York Times and Artsy. His pieces sell for prices ranging from $3000 to $15,000. #weareamaf #PaaJoe #sculpture #thefantastic #fantasycoffins #coffinart #wood #mortality #engagedwithtraditionalafricanart #animalcoffins #mixedmedia #transportation

They are an elegy to the printed page and to the comfort and stability they provided as a vessel for truth. A sculptural manipulation of these facts into fictions reflects our current political condition while proposing the material as a misunderstood artifact from a different culture. It is a relic from another time or culture that we can now contemplate and try to understand as outsiders. The truth becomes a myth. These sculptures suggest a fabricated and parallel past in which the book as an object, and the text and imagery within, are both understood and misunderstood. Explored and exposed as icons and idols of fragmented and compressed data, they offer a more direct link to content through a saturation of simultaneous experiences..." @briandettmerstudio @nancytoomeyfineart @minnesotastreetproject #briandettmer #elegies #intricatelysculpted #printedmatter #relatedtoliterature #foundobjects #contemporaryDIY #appropriation #science #assemblage #maps #networks #biomorphic #sculpture #openform #unitedstates #text #cityscapes #flora #cityscapesandcityscenes #soloshow #exhibition #nancytoomeyfineart #minnesotastreetproject #sanfrancisco #fineart #dogpatch

Happy Thanksgiving from the Makeshift Mayflower, which is probably a really good band name and also won't involve bringing wildly infectious diseases to indigenous peoples. #thehuman #thehappy

Last weekend to see the Brian Dettmer "Elegies" exhibition at Nancy Toomey Fine Art! “...Dettmer’s sculptural interventions reflect this condensing of time, transforming into forms both primitive and modern. They are modern machines but also ancient fetishes. Greco-Roman architecture, Victorian imagery, Baroque ornamentation, Mid-Century Modernism, Dadaist collage, Pop graphics and Indigenous forms or art from the Americas, Africa and the Pacific islands are all reflected within the work through a newly negated hierarchy, providing new objects that are both iconoclastic and archival. They stand as monuments to the objectivity of truth. They become a more direct experience than the narratives hidden within. A compression and an expansion, they are timeless by being full of time." @briandettmerstudio @nancytoomeyfineart @minnesotastreetproject #briandettmer #elegies #intricatelysculpted #printedmatter #relatedtoliterature #foundobjects #contemporaryDIY #appropriation #science #assemblage #maps #networks #biomorphic #sculpture #openform #unitedstates #text #cityscapes #flora #cityscapesandcityscenes #soloshow #exhibition #nancytoomeyfineart #minnesotastreetproject #sanfrancisco #fineart #dogpatch

Brian Dettmer, "The World at Home," 2019, Hardcover Books, Acrylic Varnish, 47 x 30 x 2.5 Inches. “The World At Home” is composed of nine volumes from a ten volume set of the “New Standard Encyclopedia” published by the Standard Education Society in 1943. Each book is splayed open and woven into the adjacent volumes to create a symmetrical wall work that is reminiscent of both a figure and an altar. The front image on the top book spans across both pages, featuring two globes that serve as round, robotic eyes and a banner across the top that reads “The World at Home.” This phrase serves as a selling point for the idea of an encyclopedia set, which brings information from around the world directly to you. The geometric symmetry of the pages, along with an art deco treatment of the page edges, suggests mid-century ideas of an automaton but also a more modern, pixelated, robotic figure. Yet the vintage character of the majority of the imagery suggests a connection to even more traditional ideas and ideals. The separate panels in the piece each feature a prominent focal point and suggest a type of narrative as if they were Stations of the Cross in the Catholic tradition. George Washington, Julius Caesar, and even a single cactus stand and present themselves as saintly icons, offering the recorded history of factual information as a new source of spiritual inspiration. @briandettmerstudio @nancytoomeyfineart @minnesotastreetproject #briandettmer #elegies #intricatelysculpted #printedmatter #relatedtoliterature #foundobjects #contemporaryDIY #appropriation #science #assemblage #maps #networks #biomorphic #sculpture #openform #unitedstates #text #cityscapes #flora #cityscapesandcityscenes #soloshow #exhibition #nancytoomeyfineart #minnesotastreetproject #sanfrancisco #fineart #dogpatch
