Today is the last day to see @lenaherzog_photo's #LastWhispers immersive art installation at the British Museum. I contributed several segments of aerial #drone video for the installation, including this family of #swans crossing a pond. Last Whispers is a project about a mass extinction. Every two weeks, the world loses a language. At an unprecedented speed, faster than the extinction of some species, our linguistic diversity—the very means by which we know ourselves—is eroding. Today, more than half of the world population speaks only 30 of the 7,000 languages remaining on earth. It is estimated that at least half of the currently spoken languages will have died by the end of this century. Some estimates project a much greater speed of this disappearance. (Last Whispers was conceptualized, directed, and produced by Lena Herzog with sound design and compositions by Marco Capalbo and Mark Mangini. Tomas van Houtryve contributed original drone videography.)

Saw Lena Herzog’s rather esoteric piece Last whispers @ the Kennedy center Millennium stage tonight. I especially enjoyed the virtual reality part where one was visually and auditorily emerged in the music of these dying languages. There was a panel at the end that left me with so many questions and sadly they didn’t take any questions. It was interesting in terms of musical composition, as well as linguistically. As you experience the VR you truly do wonder what it would feel like to be the last person in the universe speaking a language. Also, I left celebrating everyone who continues to speak their first language in spite of the push to assimilate. #lastwhispers

Still on a linguistic high after seeing @lenaherzog_photo's last night. I should note that we were not the only people there, though we were of course the earliest!

Sundance Film Festival / official selection / premiere of Last Whispers: An Immersive Oratorio VR (7 min) experience is at the New Frontier program. Yesterday, was the premiere of our VR work at the official selection at the New Frontier Program. Out of (they say) some 4 thousand entries 10 VRs were selected including ours. New Frontier Program does not have a competition yet but it does have a dedicated audience that come from all over the world only to see VRs. Because of the nature of VR which isolates each viewer there is never any applause afterwards as there is no sense of a communal experience. For the first time in its 10 year history the audience applauded: they applauded Last Whispers. My brilliant team is to blame @aatasse #markmangini @maggmo Theresa Schwartzman. Our collaborators @nonnydelapena @emblematicgroup—crucial to this project’s iteration in VR. We have been sold out but some tickets might still be at the door right before the screenings.
