The plane in the distance is the Samoan Clipper (NC16734), with Captain Ed Musick at the controls, photographed by Amelia Earhart from the cockpit of her Lockheed 10E Electra (NR16020) on 17 March 1937. This was the first time either pilot had ever passed another plane flying the route between mainland US and Hawaii. They both went on to remark about that incredible moment. As our friends and colleagues on E/V Nautilus leave Samoan waters and embark on National Geographic’s “Expedition Amelia” we want to share this image of the two planes and the two pilots —linked in history— and now united by one ship and one mission to reveal the ocean’s deepest secrets. Good luck and good hunting! . . . @EVNautilus @nautiluslive @natgeochannel @natgeo @specsonwrecks @search_archaeology @the_explorers_club #explorers #OET #wreckhunting #NautilusLive #EVNautilus #nationalgeographic #expeditionamelia, #ameliaearhart #edmusick #panam #maritimearchaeology #the_explorers_club #searchforsamoanclipper #airseaheritagefoundation #bobballard #panamhistory #panamhistoricalfoundation #oceanography #wanderlust #science
