I think we work in the best industry in the world. As Kevin says it, “we get to play pretend for a living”. But it’s not an easy path. It’s long days, it’s a lot of personalities, it’s high stress environments and it’s quite literally, the environment, that can often times leave us feeling burned out. Yet still, none of us could imagine life any other way. And when you have a team of people around you that you can lean on, laugh with and co-create with, it truly is a gift. • • • This week I had the honor of being the 1st AD for @thatkevinsmith alongside @bdhyde as our DP and a team of truly badass professionals as well as @ringlingcollege students. As an AD, this had the potential to be a train wreck, but these kids showed up with insatiable hunger to learn and grow and under the direction of our professionals who were happy to lead the way, it was like any other crew I’d worked with - except for one thing. A vey special energy around us all. • • • I could easily say my job is about making a schedule and keeping us on time. But that’s not what it’s about for me (I am a Coach after all). It’s my responsibility to inform, care for, love and inspire each person who steps into my world whether it’s on set or into a coaching session. You don’t have to be a Coach or an AD to seize the opportunity to support others in being their best selves. I saw that across every department from Kevin’s inspiring words each morning and throughout the days to the students supporting and teaching one another. • • • Thank you to each and everyone of you who shared your talents, your minds and your hearts…. and for letting me bring some yoga into our shoot days (I was shocked at how many people participated in an OM and it seriously made my heart swell). Twinning with my Director has never been one of my 1st AD goals, but after @thatkevinsmith and I showed up rockin’ the same color on Day 2 of “Killroy Was Here” perhaps it should be! ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ I’ve always seen the relationship between a Director and 1st AD as a sacred one, even if that may seem a little woo-woo. Maybe that’s why I love this job so much… it’s the ultimate creative and logistical connection. I love being the catalyst to a creative vision, and I love to make shit happen. A huge part of being a good Assistant Director is being in sync with your Director, anticipating what they need, and being the ultimate support system (which the coach in me loves to do). It’s a mixture of advocating for a creative vision while being realistic about logistics and budgets and weather and time. And protecting them from the BS they really don’t need to worry about. I don’t always nail it (who does?) but when you truly jive with a Director you’re working with, no matter how hard it gets (and trust me, film production gets hard), all the hard stuff becomes a breeze.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ But that’s just one part. There are also brilliant department heads and crew members I get work closely with, collaborate with, connect with and advocate for on the daily. Each with their own unique spin on the Director’s vision, each with their own expertise, talents and yes, personalities too. I never saw myself as the quintessential spotlight loving Leo, but I do adore being the center of all this creativity, sharing information and keeping the wheel moving forward. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ This post would be completely missing something if I didn’t share how wonderful Kevin is to work with and as a human. He’s kind, gracious, talented, giving (literally, he hands out ice cream and pretzels and has ice cream trucks show up) and has time and space for everyone. I adore working with this man and I’m so grateful to have him healthy and continuing to inspire people in new ways.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Now I want to know… what is it that you adore about the work you do?
