Be careful where u step! @oceanramsey cautiously fin tipping around this lemon shark. The ocean’s ecosystem is extremely fragile and we have to be careful of our impact on it. #saynotowaterbottles #saynotosingleuseplastic #reycle #stopsharkfinning #stopsharkfinsoup crazy to think that by 2050 there could be more plastic in the ocean then fish and most populations of sharks could be faced with extinction. Happy throwback Thursday! The Black-footed Albatross (Phoebastria nigripes), one of only 3 of the world's albatross species that breeds in the Northern Hemisphere. With a wingspan of around two meters (6-7 feet), this bird leads a nomadic existence, navigating thousands of kilometers of featureless North Pacific waters, travelling to areas of rich upwelling such as off the coasts of California and Alaska to find food. Like many seabirds, the only time this creature sees land is during the nesting season, where most of the world's breeding pairs returns to isolated islands in Hawai'i. Despite the remoteness of their habitats, global populations of this bird are in decline, due to a combination of deaths from longline bycatch and plastic ingestion - a true tragedy for such a magnificent animal. Please dispose of your plastic wastes responsibly and opt for non-longline caught seafood, for this species and the global ocean ecosystem. 3-year-old J50 “Scarlet” has been declared missing by the Center for Whale Research and is presumably deceased. - Scarlet was a miracle baby and a symbol of hope for the endangered Southern Resident killer whale population. She was the first surving calf born during the Southern Resident baby boom that occured in 2014/15 and was also one of the only females that were born during the babyboom, the other being J53 “Kiki”. Scarlet was also born to the oldest known Southern Resident mother, as Slick was already 42 years old when she gave birth to her and was actually believed to be post-reproductive. However, when Scarlet was fist sighted her back and dorsal fin were covered in rake marks which suggests that her birth might have been difficult and another whale may have grabbed with Scarlet with its teeth, pulling her out of the birth canal. Her name “Scarlet” is a refference to these unique scars. Soon she became a favorite among whale watchers and others and was also known as “world’s happiest baby orca” because of her exuberant breaching. Unfortunately, in the beginning of June Scarlet was said to be in a bad condition and photos confirmed that she had a peanut-head, a clear sigh of emaciation. - Her body condition continued to deteriorate despite the efforts to save her life. But she still travelled with her family most of the time despite big waves and bad weather, showing just how strong her will to live really was. Earlier this month Scarlet went missing for two days and was thought to have passed away, but she showed up again and continued to swim with her family. Unforunately, shortly after on September 7th, Scarlet went missing again and she was declared missing and presumed deceased on September 13th. - Rest in peace, sweet Scarlet ? You will be missed, by your family most of all. - Only 74 Southern Residents remain. - photo: @gary_j27 caption: @southernresidentorcas
***EDIT: thank you everyone who’s like this so far, commented, tagged a friend or slid into our DM’s (not in THAT way). Please follow for more updates and turn post notifications on - we’ve got some more facts lined up ready for you! Also, tag a friend who needs to see this, it’s an issue that affects us all (even if you don’t personally eat fish your family and friends might do) and the change starts with US. Love you all ? *** @zooeydeschanel laying down the facts ? . ? If you weren’t already concerned about the vast amount of plastic us humans use then this clip may/should change that. . ? A huge amount of the plastic we use and don’t (or can’t) recycle ends up in the seas. The larger items and pieces of plastic may harm the animals that call the seas and oceans their home. Smaller pieces and microplastic may be eaten by fish and then end up right back where it started it’s eternal journey through our planet: in our homes, only this time inside the seafood that we eat. Enjoy your #spicytunaroll ? . ? Plastic is not good for us or the planet and the more I read about it the more convinced I am that going #plasticfree is the only way forward. . ? @barely_conscious stems from my own ignorance (I’ll be the first one to admit it) about these issues and my wish to learn more and hopefully help others along the way. . ? I’ve been spending days browsing through some of the wonderful accounts committed to the #zerowaste movement. It’s been so great seeing that Instagram is not just for the instamodels and chia bowls (although I love that side of it too) but that there’s room for some great accounts fighting for a meaningful cause. . #nature #underwaterlife #underwaterart #waterlust #protectwhatyoulove #seaturtle #divinglife #oceanlife #underwaterphotographer

Having seen whalesharks a plenty before, this wasn't near the top of the list of things I wanted to see in Galapagos. However, being alone in the blue, making a slow ascent, with nothing but my bubbles for company, this was a truly amazing moment. It's some feeling to turn around to see a gigantic head and 15m of whale shark heading directly at you. Sometimes I wish, I were a fish. ? then I remember the over fishing, ocean deadzones, plastic crisis and oil spills and realize that no creature is safe from the impact us humans have on this planet. . . That's why I try and live my life with as little impact as possible. Here are some of the ways I have found to help keep our fish safe : ?Eat a vegan diet ♻ Reuse and fix my belongings ? Buy only what I NEED ✈ Try to travel less/more sustainably ? Be mindful of food waste of at least compost. ?I quit single use plastic ? Live with our planet in mind. . .
