#missg_inspector . . . . "NOBODY WANTS WAR" Priestley demonstrates Birling's foolishness by using dramatic irony. He lists false statements (including that the Titanic is "unsinkable") to make that audience in 1945 dislike the character and believe him to be ignorant and arrogant. In turn, Priestley is criticising the foolishness of the wealthy, Capitalist society by showing how naive they were - wrapped up in a world of profit, they had little understanding of the rest of the world around them. . . . . "AS IF WE WERE ALL MIXED UP LIKE BEES IN A HIVE" and "COMMUNITY AND ALL THAT NONSENSE". Priestley's uses a simile to present Birling's view on socialism. He is mocking the socialist viewpoint of bees working together as a 'community'. The Inspector arrives immediately after this which symbolises the disruption of Capitalist society after WWII. . . . "YES, YES, HORRID BUSINESS. BUT..." Mr Birling's reaction to the girl's death. Shows he's not interested or sympathetic. He wants to get rid of the Inspector so he can carry on with his celebration, showing his selfishness. Short sentences and repetition . . "STILL, I CAN'T ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY" Sums up Birling's attitudes towards the poor. Interesting use of 'can't'... Is it that he can't or that he doesn't want to? . . . . "(ANGRILY) THERE'LL BE A PUBLIC SCANDAL" Clearly shows the differences between the Generations. Once the inspector has left, the younger characters feel guilty. Mr Birling, however, only cares about himself amd his reputation - showing his selfishness. . . . . "I'D GIVE THOUSANDS" The inspectors response to this quotation is that he is offering money at the wrong time. Mr Birling could have paid his workers more money. However, he is only prepared to give money to cover up his misdeeds. #missg_inspector #gcseenglishlit #keyquotations #keyquote #revision #englishrevision #aninspectorcalls

#missg_inspector . . . "THERE ARE MILLIONS AND MILLIONS AND MILLIONS..." In the Inspector's final speech, he sums up the play's moral message: there were millions of people loving in poverty who were ignored and mistreated by "respectable citizens". Priestley's use of repetition reinforces the message. Some say the repetition is an example of hyperbole, but it was probably true. The name Smith is common and was chosen by Priestley as a symbol of the number of people living in poverty. Eva is not just one girl: she represents all women living in poverty. Here Priestley us talking directly to the audience through his mouthpiece, the Inspector, stating his Socialist viewpoint. ____________________________________________ #gcseenglishlit #keyquotations #keyquote #revision #englishrevision #aqaenglishlit

Priestley presents a dual nature in Gerald within #anInspectorCalls - when he discovers that ‘Daisy Renton’ has taken her own life he is genuinely upset. ‘Sorry - i - well - I’ve suddenly realised - taken it in - that she’s dead’ This is evident through the use of dashes/hyphens which illustrate his upset. These pauses maybe to show him taking breaths or holding back his emotions. Later in the play however when he discovers that the Inspector wasn’t a real Inspector he changes his tune and very much embodies the capitalist attitudes that Priestley was trying to dispel. ‘Everything’s alright now Sheila. What about this ring?’ The use of interrogative illustrates capitalist attitudes perfectly. Now that he’s off the hook he thinks that things can return to normal, as though nothing has happened, much to the anger of the younger generation. #tipsTorevise #gcse #english #literature #exams #revise #revision #englishliterature
