Messier 46 an open star cluster and NGC2438 a planetary nebula was captured in this image. When I was stacking these images at first I thought I had some crazy artifact in my photo and after investigating online I learned I had also captured a planetary nebula. Talk about a fun surprise! Also Messier 46 is an open cluster in the constellation of Puppis and had a magnitude of 6.1. NGC2438 is not actually in M46, but is in the same line of sight. How's that for interesting? NGC 6543: Also known as the Cat's Eye, this planetary nebula is located about 3,000 light years from Earth. A composite image of data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue) and Hubble Space Telescope (red and purple) of NGC 6543 shows a phase that Sun-like stars undergo at the end of their lives. Material from the outer layers of the star in the Cat's Eye is flying away at about 4 million miles per hour. A hot core is left behind that eventually collapses to become a white dwarf star. The Chandra data reveal that the central star in NGC 6543 is surrounded by a cloud of multi-million-degree gas. NGC 6543, commonly known as the Cat's Eye Nebula, is a realtively bright planetary nebula in the constellation of Draco. This image was photographed by LAAS member and Mount Wilson coordinator, Darrell Dooley. It was captured with a Samsung S7 in pro mode through the eyepiece of the 60 inch telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory.
“A #bipolar butterfly emerges from stellar demise” ??✨ - What resemble dainty butterfly wings are actually roiling cauldrons of gas heated to nearly 20,000°C. The gas is tearing across space at more than 950,000 kph — fast enough to travel from Earth to the Moon in 24 minutes! - A dying #star that was once about five times the mass of the #Sun is at the centre of this fury. It has ejected its envelope of gases and is now unleashing a stream of #ultraviolet #radiation that is making the cast-off material glow. This object is an example of a #planetary #nebula, so-named because many of them have a round appearance resembling that of a planet when viewed through a small #telescope. - NGC 6302 lies within our Milky Way #galaxy, roughly 3,800 #lightyears away in the constellation of #Scorpius. The glowing gas is the star's outer layers, expelled over about 2,200 years. The "butterfly" stretches for more than two light-years, which is about half the distance from the Sun to the nearest star, Proxima Centauri. - The central star itself cannot be seen, because it is hidden within a doughnut-shaped ring of dust, which appears as a dark band pinching the nebula in the centre. The thick dust belt constricts the star's outflow, creating the classic "bipolar" or hourglass shape displayed by some planetary nebulae. - #butterflynebula #scorpius #scorpio #NGC6032 #yinadreamsofspace - #Repost @spacediary ・・・ NGC 6302, also called the Bug Nebula, Butterfly Nebula, is a bipolar planetary nebula in the constellation Scorpius. The structure in the #nebula is among the most complex ever observed in planetary nebulae. The spectrum of NGC 6302 shows that its central star is one of the hottest stars in the #galaxy, with a surface temperature in excess of 200,000 K, implying that the #star from which it formed must have been very large. ____________________________________________ ? 10 years ago, Hubble shared this beautiful image of the planetary nebula NGC 2371, the remains of a Sun-like star, glowing with ultraviolet light. Hubble can see ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light. Its partner telescope that launches next year, the James #Webb Space Telescope, will see even farther in the infrared portion of the light spectrum, sharpening our view and understanding of the universe. - - #hubble #ngc2371 #jwst #jameswebbspacetelescope #nasa #space #discoveries #wondersoftheuniverse #cosmos #darkskies #bridgendastro #getoutside #skyatnight #ultraviolet #infrared #visiblelight #like4like

The Dumbbell Nebula ✨ (Apple Core Nebula/M27/NGC 6853) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula, at a distance of about 1,360 light-years. It was the first planetary nebula to be discovered; by Charles Messier in 1764. At its brightness of visual magnitude and its diameter, it is easily visible in binoculars, and a popular observing target in amateur telescopes. #dumbbellnebula #applecorenebula #vulpecula #constellation #m27 #nebula #nebulae #messier #messier27 #stars #star #universe #cosmos #space #spacetime #astronomy #astrophotography #universe? #astronomer #astrophysics #physics #science #scienceoftheuniverse #universelover #cluster #clusters #astronomía

M57: The Ring Nebula. - Image Credit: NASA, ESA, Hubble Legacy Archive; Composition: Giuseppe Donatiello. - Except for the rings of Saturn, the Ring Nebula (M57) is probably the most famous celestial band. Its classic appearance is understood to be due to our own perspective, though. The recent mapping of the expanding nebula's 3-D structure, based in part on this clear Hubble image, indicates that the nebula is a relatively dense, donut-like ring wrapped around the middle of a (American) football-shaped cloud of glowing gas. The view from planet Earth looks down the long axis of the football, face-on to the ring. Of course, in this well-studied example of a planetary nebula, the glowing material does not come from planets. Instead, the gaseous shroud represents outer layers expelled from the dying, once sun-like star, now a tiny pinprick of light seen at the nebula's center. Intense ultraviolet light from the hot central star ionizes atoms in the gas. The Ring Nebula is about one light-year across and 2,000 light-years away. . - #education #research #space #nasa #amazing #universe #jpl #astronomy #astronomylover #cosmos #amazing #research #nebula #supernova #thewitchsbroomnebula #beautiful #celestial #hubble #ionizedatoms #stellarastronomy #m57 #constellation #theringnebula #planetaryscience #nature #magnificent #apod

When a small star dies, this is what happens, it's called a #PlanetaryNebula. The leftover gas from the star is released into outer space and the hot core of the star continues emitting energy, illuminating the released gas.
