For the first day of Fall, I present to you the Island of the Dolls - where a young girl drowned, and the caretaker of the island found her, and her doll, floating. He hung her doll in a tree as a memory, and haunted by her spirit, continued to hang dolls in the trees to appease her until the day he died, 50 years later, in the same part of the river she did. ??? I've never seen anything like this. Such a creepy place that was never supposed to be a tourist attraction. It belonged to a man named Don Julián Santana Barrera. According to the legend he discovered a little girl drowned in the canals. He also found a doll floating nearby and, assuming it belonged to the deceased girl, hung it from a tree as a sign of respect. After this, he began to hear things even though he was miles away from civilization. Driven by fear, he spent the next fifty years hanging more and more dolls, some missing body parts, all over the island in an attempt to appease what he believed to be the drowned girl’s spirit. After Barrera’s death in 2001 his body was reportedly found in the exact spot where he found the girl’s body fifty years before. The story goes that Julian found a little girl drowned in mysterious circumstances while he was not able to save her life. Shortly thereafter, Julian saw a floating doll near the canals. Most probably, the doll belonged to the girl. He picked up the doll and hung it to a tree, as a way of showing respect and support the spirit of the girl. Julian was apparently haunted by the spirit of the girl and started hanging more dolls in an attempt to please her spirit. He soon realized the dolls themselves were possessed by the spirits of dead girls, and continued to collect creepy dolls hanging them over the entire island. All of the dolls were found discarded, most are a little worse for wear. The man lived out his life here until one day he died of a heart attack.
